Midtown Manhattan is the only self-portrait in the Meta-Human collection.
Louise Giblin first visited New York in October 2010. The experience had such an impact that when she returned to England, using a cast of her own body made by her husband and daughter, the artist proceeded to create the most complex sculpture of her career:
‘There’s an incredible energy out there and I wanted to be part of that. Midtown Manhattan was also beautiful in a way for which I had not been prepared; viewing the city at night from the Empire State Building and Rockerfeller Centre left me speechless. I love Art Deco, Thirties’ architecture, brown stone, burnished copper and yellow taxis. I hope this piece captures how exciting it was for me to be there.’
